RESUMO

Magnesium is an important cation in our body and it has been used intravenously for the treatment of acute asthma. However, there is on1y one study with its oral use for chronic asthma, in adults. The objective of this study was to compare the effects of magnesium oral supplementation on moderate atopic asthma in children and adolescents. lt was a prospective double-blinded study, randomized, placebo-controlled. Were included 37 patients between 7 and 19 years. All of them received basic medications for asthma, like corticoesteroids (fluticasona -250 Mcg in the morning and at night) and 132 agonists in case ofnecessity (four times a day). The patients were randomized in two groups that received either magnesium-glycine or just glycine (placebo). All of the patients were submitted to pulmonary function and methacholine was used to measure the bronchial reactivity, before and after the supplementation with magnesium or placebo. Blood samples were a1so collected, before and after the supplementation; to measure calcium, magnesium and 19B. The patients were followed up every fifteen days for checking clinical symptoms and the use of medications. After two months 19 patients were found to be in the control group and 18 in the magnesium group. The medium values of the FEV1, FVC ,FEF25-75% ofthe FVC and PC20 of methacholine were significantly higher and clinical symptoms were 1ess in the magnesium group. The conclusion of the study was that magnesium is effective for chronic ~ and it could be a good a1ternative treatment and corroborate with other drugs to give better conditions of life to the astbmatic patients
