RESUMO

This research was carried to evaluate salinity effects on initial development of Jatropha plants through two experiments. The first, to evaluate the effects of salinity on the germination was conducted at the Laboratory of Seed Analysis (LAS), Federal University of Lavras (UFLA) in Lavras-MG, Brazil. Jatropha seeds were exposed to seven salinity concentration levels (0.0, 2.0, 4.0, 6.0, 8.0, 10.0 and 12.0 dS m-1) by using paper substract wet by CaCl2 and KCl solutions. The following variables were determined: First germination count (PCG), germination percentage (PG), germination rate (IVG) and germination time for 50% of seeds (T50). A reduction on germination percentage was observed for solutions higher than 8 dS m-1; increases of T50 and reductions of PCG and IVG were observed as the on electrical conductivity increased. The second, the initial growth of Jatropha plant was evaluated at a greenhouse at the Engineering Department of the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA), under different levels of irrigation water salinity. A completely randomized design was used with 5 treatments ( 0.02 dS m-1, 2.0 dS m-1, 4.0 dS m-1, 6.0 dS m-1 and 8.0 dS m-1) and 5 replications. The irrigation was accomplished according to soil water retention curve and resistance block reading, restoring the soil water content to its field capacity. It was verified that water salinity affected the plants characteristics significantly. Water salinity levels higher than 2,0 dS m-1 caused damage to plant development.
