RESUMO

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the number of insertion and removal cycles on retention force of four Overdenture bar-clip attachment systems. Sample included 40 specimens which were assigned to 4 groups (n=10): 1- Conexão Sistemas de Prótese (polymeric clip); 2- Sterngold-Implamed (polymeric clip); 3- 3i- Implant innovation (metallic clip); and 4- SIN Sistema de Implante Nacional (metallic/metal clip). Specimens immersed in artificial saliva were tested to 5.500 cycles at 0.8 Hz using a servohydraulic machine (MTS-810). During the test, retention force values were recorded 6 times using the tensile test (Test Works for Test Star) at a speed of 1mm/min, with a load cell of 1 KN: initial retention force; at 1100 insertion and removal cycles; 2200 cycles; 3300 cycles; 4400 cycles; and 5500 cycles). Data were submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey test (p<0.05). No statistically significant difference was observed for the groups using polymeric clips; however, those using metallic clips showed significant difference, except after 5500 cycles. Conexão and 3i attachment systems showed statistically significant difference after 4400 cycles. Comparison between Conexão and SIN Systems and Sterngold-Implamed and SIN demonstrated significant difference at all cycles. Sterngold-Implamed and 3i systems showed statistically significant difference only after 5500 cycles. Results showed that the systems evaluated displayed satisfactory retention force values at all cycling periods tested, with the highest values observed for Conexão and Sterngold-Implamed. No component fractures or reduction in retention force values was found for any of the systems tested
