RESUMO

This study aims at analyzing the importance of the teaching of arts and its contribution to further stimulate the creativity of children enrolled in the first grade of a public Elementary School in Londrina, Brazil. It seeks theory foundation in researchers who explore human creativity, formal education and arts teaching. Initially, it analyses and describes human creativity and its conceptual meanings under different theoretical focuses and how creativity has been considered and applied in the school daily life. It contextualizes the teaching of arts and its enforcement as a mandatory subject under Brazilian law (Law 5692/71). An arts teacher?s educational-pedagogical work and her tutoring of children made up the empirical basis of the study, while the theory was based the Qualitative Descriptive Methodology. Data collection and analysis used observation, semi-structured interview, field diaries and photographic records. The data analysis showed that children?s creativity can flow and present itself in daily school life at unexpected moments. It also showed that the difficulties in arts teaching can be overcome and, in order to achieve that, the teaching institutions must always invest on teachers? continued formation and on their educational-pedagogic and artistic work, thus contributing to the playful-artistic experience and to a really significant learning to both teachers and children.
