RESUMO

The purpose of this Project was to contribute to the understanding of the relationship between mental health, psychopathology and altered states of consciousness, especially in the religious context. This is a cross-sectional observational study that aimed to present the relationship between health and religiosity arising from the exercise of mediumship practices from two genuinely Brazilian religions: Santo Daime and Umbanda. The subjects of analysis were one hundred and six (n = 106) participants, 42 of the Santo Daime (Group 1 with 19 converts, Group 2 with 23 novice members), and 44 of Umbanda (Group 3 with 22 converts, Group 4 with 22 novice members). The control group (Group 5), had 20 volunteers. The study comprised two perspectives, qualitative and quantitative. A qualitative approach was supported by the phenomenological theory based on Karl Jaspers. The instruments used were: Profiles Questionnaire and instruments cross-culturally recognized validated instruments into Brazilian Version: Social Support Scale of the Medical Outcomes Study (Sherbourne &Stewart, 1991); Resilience Scale (Wagnild &Young, 1993); Dissociative Experiences (Carlson &Putnam, 1993), Subjective Well-Being Scale (Albuquerque &Troccoli, 2004), and Spiritual/Religious Coping Scale (CRE-Brief, Panzini &Bandeira, 2005). The health research was conducted by analysis of correlations between religious groups and a control group observing the following aspects: a) similarities and differences between expert and novice adherents being from an accurate design of the profile of the participants presented firstly at the: Health Profile (physical and mental health including the etiology of the features of dissociation such as physical or psychological abuse, sleepwalking, imaginary friends, and drug addiction and recovery); Religiosity Profile (exploring the exercise of spirituality in the face of the new cosmogony with the learning of psychic abilities) and Social Profile (sociodemographic data); b) the association between social and doctrinal support network and resilience, presence of dissociative experiences, subjective well-being experiences and religious/spiritual coping strategies coming from the searching of the religious services; c) the impact of the exercise of the current religious practice on the frequency and the control of the dissociative experiences and possible repercussions on health issues and d) investigate the association between the acquired domain over the dissociative experiences and the drug addiction recovery (use/abuse) of psychoactive substances attributed to the participation in the rituals. Results: the sample is composed of 38 men and 68 women. Mean age = 38 years. Bachelor education= 68%. Reason for choice=70% spiritual. Cradle Religion=75.5%, Catholic. Dissociative experiences=reduction in frequency and increased domain over the abrupt change of mood and contradictory and simultaneous feelings after the participation in the rituals, in both groups. Abuse with an adult=prevalence in the general population. Substances use with recovery attributed to the ritual in various fees. Scale with a significant difference between groups=CRE-Brief
