RESUMO

This investigation presents a hierarchical plate and shell finite element formulation based on the p-approximation concept. Starting with the superparametric quadrilateral linear element with consistent numerical integration, it is achieved, after successive hierarchical refinements, a finite element which is sufficiently accurate and effective in a large variety of cases. The hierarchical nature of this formulation yields a computationally efficient model specially when considering the adaptative refinements since it can use different polynomial expansions at distinct sides and elements generating new hierarchical degrees of freedom just when required by the errors involved in the analysis. It is made at last, through a set of examples, a discussion about hierarchical approximation when employing distorted elements, in which it is suggested the use of the 9-node Lagrangian family element to describe the geometry of boundary value problems concerning shell analysis
