RESUMO

Cast titanium has been introduced for fixed and removable applications due to its biocompatibility and low weight to volume. The lack of longitudinal evaluation of the clinical performance of cast frames induced the aim of this study in verifying comparatively the plastic deformation and surface roughness of removable partial denture (RPD) frameworks obtained in commercially pure (c.p.) titanium and Ti-6AI-4V alloy after 6 and 12 months in service with samples finished in Co-Cr-Mo alloy. Thirty one out of forty two RPD frameworks were randomly manufactured with one of the materials evolved. The surface roughness test was carried out before the RPD installation and after 6 and 12 months of service with a Surfcorder SE 1700 - Kosaka Ltd - Japan - measuring equipment. The results were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey s multiple comparison test with the statistical significance set at the 0.05 probability level. The clasp plastic deformations were computed in percentage of linear alteration using a Ernst Leitz - Germany microscope with an electronic measuring caliper. Plastic deformation results were subjected to Mann-Whitey and Kruskall-Watlis non parametric tests. RPD frameworks obtained in c.p. titanium and titanium alloy showed decreased surface roughness after service period. Initial values varied from 0.32 to 0.37 |im and from 0.23 to 0.26 jam after service. After 6 months of service, c.p. titanium RPD frameworks were statistically similar to those obtained in Co-Cr-Mo alloys, which did not show statistically differences among the evaluation periods and they exhibited values from 0.22 to 0.17 ^m of surface roughness. There were no significant differences among the metals and the evaluation periods regarding the clasp plastic deformations in spite of the 0.54% of deformation for Ti-6AI-4V against 0.06 % for c.p. titanium
