RESUMO
Age structure of Brazilian population is changing and the increasing number of elderly people turns research in Gerontology increasingly relevant. Issues on life quality in old age concern medical doctors, educators, administrators and all those who believe that educational opportunities can be beneficial in this life phase. This research assessed the impact of dance considered as both physical and expressional activities on improvement of the functional state and the physical, psychological and social well-being of sedentary old people. 40 men and women aged between 60 and 89 were assigned to either a control or an experimental group. The research was carried out at the "Asilo São Vicente de Paula" old-age home located in the city of Atibaia (São Paulo State), which was chosen due to physical inactivity of its occupants. Eight instruments were used for data collection: a questionnaire, to collect sociodemographic data; a Global Life Satisfaction scale; a Domain Satisfaction scale; an Animation scale; a Sociability scale; a Balance test; a Flexibility test; an Agility test. Data collection was carried out twice: at the beginning of the fieldwork and after the fourth months of the DPE (Dance Program for the Elderly). Adherence to the program was total and brought about physical, psychological and social benefits for the elderly, therefore enhancing their life quality.
