RESUMO

The necessity for making Natural Sciences classes more practical and in accordance with dynamic and meaningful teaching principles, was felt in 1977, when those classes were being given to students belonging to the Department of Biology, at the Federal University of Piauí (UFPI). The employment of actual materials concerning Botany, Zoology and Geology served as one of the requirements to satisfy those needs. Since the immediate employment of those materials was not always possible, they were kept in 11 four compartments in the Biology laboratory, for occasionaly needs; the considerable increase in the quantity of those materials was so impressive that, as a result, their exhibition was requested, at the time of the 5th University Journey and after some visits by the public. Those materials proved to be attractive, elucidative and significant as to the teaching of Natural Sciences, and also acted as a stimulus for further research, permanent display and preservation. This gave tise to the idea of creating a museum, although no clear notion in this respect had been acquired so far. By that time, an invitation to attend a post graduation course in Sciences and Mathematics teaching at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) was received. During the course, which was held by .distinguished Brazilian and foreign teachers, a series of studies about museums was developed and a project was devised as the basis for the creation of the Natural Sciences Museum at the UFPI.
