RESUMO

This work was carried out in the Laboratory of Seeds Analysis in the Department of Fitotecnia at Federal University of Viçosa from March 2004 to November 2005, in order to evaluate the effect of sarcotesta presence, seed moisture content and kind of packaging on papaya seed conservation during storage. Papaya seeds from Formosa group, hybrid Tainung 01, dried up to 5, 8 and 11% moisture content were packed in four different kinds of package (multifoliate kraft paper, aluminum foil - pouch, tin container and polyethylene bag) and stored for 15 months at room laboratory condition. Before storage and at each three months, seed moisture content was determined and standard germination, first count and accelerated aging test were performed. Alterations in the enzyme systems alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), malate dehydrogenase (MDH) and acid phosphatase (AP) were also assessed. It was verified that recem-harvested papaya seeds had dormancy, which was overcomed by storage for six months. Seeds with sarcotesta showed lower physiological quality in relation to without sarcotesta ones, during all the storage time. Seeds with sarcotesta had the viability preserved until the nineth month storage, with drastic reduction on seed quality from then on, independent of seed moisture content and packing. The physiological quality of the seeds without sarcotesta, with 8 and 11% of moisture content, was kept until 12 month of storage under environment condition, independent of the packing. Impermeable package was not indicated for the storage of seeds without sarcotesta with 5% moisture content. There were enzymatic alterations related to seed moisture content, but there was no association between papaya seed deterioration during the storage and phosphatase acid and malate dehydrogenases enzymatic systems alterations.
