RESUMO

Sepetiba Bay is considered as one of the most important ecosystems of the State of Rio de Janeiro extending approximately 305 Km2 of surface area. The Xanthoidea crab doesnt have a great economical importance, but it plays a large role in the marine and estuarine ecosystem, keeping in mind their abundance and their many predatory species. The objectives of this work were to get a crab fauna survey and to know about the distribution and abundance of the Xanthoidea Superfamily in Sepetiba Bay. The collection of samples took place from March/2004 to November/2005, at low tide during the dry and wet season. They were six determined sampling points in accordance with the granulometry, water hydrodynamic and environmental pollution. They were 11 species identified belonging to the Xanthoidea Superfamily, divided into three Families (Menippidae, Panopeidae and Pilumnidae): Eriphia gonagra (Fabricius, 1781); Eurypanopeus abbreviatus (Stimpson, 1860), Eurytium limosum (Say, 1818), Acantholobulus schmitti (Stimpsom, 1871), Menippe nodifrons Stimpson, 1859 and the Panopeus americanus Saussure, 1857, Panopeus hartii Smith, 1869, Panopeus lacustris Desbone, 1867 and Panopeus occidentalis Saussure, 1857; Pilumnus dasypodus Kingsley, 1879 and Pilumnus floridanus Stimpson, 1871. The location with the largest diversity was Lage do Lopes and the Minor Coroa Grande, but Coroa Grande presented the largest dominance. The most abundant species with a constant presence in all of the sampling points was P. lacustris the least abundant were E. gonagra and P. dasypodus. The sampling points didnt show a significant difference in relation to the individual number, but the individual number in relation to the species showed a significant difference.
