RESUMO

Introduction: According to the scientific literature, the elderly people feeding behavior is associated with sociodemographic and cultural variables. Objective: The aim of this study was verify the association among elderly feeding behavior residing in the urban area of São Paulo city and sociodemographic and cultural variables. Methods: Cross-sectional study, with elderly (≥ 60 years), of both sex, from the SABE Survey: Health, Wellbeing and Aging, performed in 2000, in São Paulo city, selected by probabilistic sample. The study variables were self-reported: feeding behavior (number of meals <3/day, absence of habit to prepare hot meals and buying food, and frequence of food intake (dairy products <1x/day; fruits and vegetables <2x/day; liquids ≤ 5 glasses/day; meat, fish or poultry <3x/week; eggs and legumes <1x/week; and alcohol -yes)); sociodemographic (education, sex, age groups, marital status and company at home); and cultural (life in rural area during childhood or adolescence, religion and nationality). It was used the Rao &Scott test and multiple logistic regression (p<0,05) and Stata Version 10.1 program. Results: This research studied 2143 elderly people (59% women e 78% age group 60-74). It was found positive association between: 1. education ≤ 4 years and dairy products, meat, fish or poultry, fruits or vegetables and habit of not buying food. 2. zero years of education and liquids and number of meals. 3. male sex and dairy products, fruits or vegetables, alcohol and not preparing hot meals. 4. group ≥ 75 years and liquids, habit of not preparing hot meals and not buying food; 5. marital status: divorced and meat, fish or poultry; eggs and legumes and fruits or vegetables; 6. singles and meat, fish or poultry; 7. to be foreigner and eggs and legumes; 8. life in rural area and liquids; 9. \"other religions\" and not buying food; and negative association between: 1. education ≤ 4 years and alcohol; 2. male sex and eggs and legumes and liquids; 3. group ≥ 75 years and dairy products, fruits or vegetables, alcohol and number of meals; 4. marital status: divorced and not buying food; 5. living alone and not preparing meals and not buying food; 6. to be foreigner and dairy products and fruits or vegetables; 7. evangelical religion and alcohol. Conclusion: It was found association, positive or negative, among feeding behavior and sociodemographic and cultural variables, with prominance of education, sex and age group.
