RESUMO

In pediatrics, the majority of surgical procedures require a short pre and post operative care. On this way , the knowledge and implementation of an out patient surgical program brings a better rationalization in the care of the operated child, avoiding the unnecessary separation from the relatives, with a better psychic, socio-economical recovery and a lesser risk of hospital infection. With the necessity for simplification of the surgical procedures in the child , within a program of regiona1ization of the medical care , and because of the great number of patients seen at the "Hospital Infantil Álvaro Ribeiro", a Campinas Regional Hospital, in São Paulo State, Brazil, we present the main surgical and anesthetic procedures in 1 235 pediatric patients , with 1259 procedures, done as a out patient basis, from August 1978 to August 1983. The most frequent pathologies were in the inguino-scrotal and in the penial area, including 1 046 cases (84%). In the inguino-scrotal pathologies, the most frequent were the hernias in 461 cases (36.8%) and in the penial area the circumsicions in 352 cases (29.3%). The anesthetic procedures were the caudal and lumbar blocks in 681 cases (55.3%), the inhalatory general anesthesia with orotracheal intubation in 261 cases (21.1%) and inhalatory general anesthesia without intubation in 169 cases (13.6%). Early general complications were seen in 10 cases (0.8%), mainly related to the anesthetic procedure. The late complications were noted in seven cases (0.5%), mainly related to infection in the surgical wound. All the complications were solved without sequelae by clinical treatment. In conclusion the out patient surgical procedures in pediatrics, with all our personnel and technical conditions, has a 0.8% of early and 0.5% of late complications, being without mortality, and possible to be implemented with our precarious social economics and cultural conditions
