RESUMO

Soybean is the most important crop to man, because it contains in the grain, about 20% of oil and 40% of protein of low cost of production. Brazil is the second largest world producer of soybeans; however the most of the production is destined for industries of vegetable oil and the exportation in the form of grain. Even reducing the risk of chronic diseases in the West soybeans isn t well accepted, due to the flavor characteristic of green beans. In Brazil, the direct consumption as food is very small. To increase the consumption of soybeans, the UEL aims to develop varieties appropriate for human consumption. This work aimed to characterize and select soybean lines appropriate for human consumption. Two experiments were conducted in the agricultural year of 2010/11. In the first experiment were sown 71 lines originated from the program of breeding UEL s soybean food. In the second experiment were sown 37 lines of the program of breeding UFV s soybean. The experimental design was completely randomized with three replications; each experimental unit consisted of one meter in length and spacing of 0.45 m. The following characteristics of agronomic importance were evaluated: days to flowering, plant height at flowering, color flower, agronomic value, days from emergence to maturity, plant height at maturity, height of first pod, color of pubescence, grain yield, the coat color, hilum color, and weight of thousand seeds. Quantitative data were subjected to analysis of variance and the means grouped by Scott-Knott test at 5% probability. The UEL lines 17, 18 and 34, can be appropriate for human consumption. The genotype Wilami allows obtaining progenies with one hundred seed mass bigger than 20 grams. The lines 3 and 19 UFV s, are productive and early maturity. It is possible to develop soybean cultivars destined to human consumption, with a yield equal to the cultivars for the industry of grain processing.
