RESUMO

This study searches deeper understandings of the process of pre-professional English teacher education in the context of a public university in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The theoretical constructs of Interactional Sociolinguistics equipped my analysis of the discourse generated in a supervision session and the principles of the Exploratory Practice guided my investigation of the work developed with the student-teachers. Within an Exploratory Practice perspective, it is possible to search for understandings about our professional context without radical changes in our daily practice. For this purpose, I have analysed the discourse co-constructed by myself ¿ school teacher, teacher trainer, advisor, researcher and author of this thesis ¿ and two English language student-teachers in a supervising session. Our discursive action through the negotiation of our argumentative movements became central to the understanding of what was going on interactionally in this session. Puzzles related to the classroom, to the teaching practice during the teacher training course and to teacher education in general emerged from the analysis of data generated in this reflection. Then, in Potentially Exploitable Viewing Sessions (PEVS), I shared these puzzles with the other two research participants. This study placed joint professional reflection in a central position, as both the supervision meeting ¿ where the investigation started ¿ and the viewing sessions offered opportunities for reaching deeper understandings about practice teaching and teacher education in general. We also enhanced our understandings regarding the fact that there are still many other puzzles regarding teacher education on which to reflect and, most importantly, the comprehension that professional reflection is an endless process. Thus, I see this thesis as a contribution to my own professional practice and also to the area of pre-professional English teacher education.
