RESUMO

ABSTRACT Introduction Pharmaceutical care, a concept of professional practice that can contribute to achieve positive results and minimize the negative results related to the use of drugs in society, since 2004 is included in the National Agenda of Priorities in Health Research and has been widely discussed in Brazil by researchers, policy-makers and practitioners. Objective - To describe the characteristics of the Brazilian scientific production on pharmaceutical care, describing its authors, the research conducted, published articles and studied populations. Method - Descriptive study of bibliographical basis through selection and analysis of published articles by Brazilians authors in journals indexed in Medline, Embase, Lilacs, Web of Science and International Pharmaceutical Abstracts databases. Results - Regarding authors, 72.7 per cent were from the Southeast region, 62.3 per cent were affiliate with state universities, 11.1 per cent with private universities, 12.2 per cent with health delivery systems and 7.1 per cent with foreign institutions. As for research type, 86.8 per cent were descriptive, 10.5 per cent analytical, testing cause and effect, and 2.6 per cent testing association. The main researched fields were community pharmacy, hospital services and primary health care units. Articles were classified as original in 52.6 per cent of cases, updates in 28.9 per cent and revisions in 10.5 per cent. The title and abstract did not represent the work in 21.1 per cent and 10.5 per cent of the articles, respectively. The increase in the number of publications in indexed journals started in 2006 and showed elevation in the following year. As for the methodology, 42.1 per cent of the authors conducted a bibliographical study, 28.9 per cent a qualitative inquiry, 23.7 per cent intervention study and 5.3 per cent observational. In 55.3 per cent of the articles, the conclusions corresponded to the initially set objectives outlined in the articles. In 50,0 per cent of the articles, subjects were identified as: patient, non-patient, pharmacist, non-pharmacist pharmaceutical professional, health professional and pharmacy student. The most researched subjects were elderly and patients with chronic diseases. Conclusion - Despite the limited number of publications, there is a noticeable increase in the scientific production with regards to pharmaceutical care practice with potential growth in the country. With practice consolidation, it is expected the increase in number, scope and quality of the research conducted so as to yield knowledge with scientific rigor that contributes for the recognition of the pharmacists actions in the patient-care team
