RESUMO

Hyperphosphatemia is a common problem in patients with chronic renal failure, particularly in those who have reached end-stage renal diseased. The main methods of achieving control of the increased of phosphate are reduction of dietary intake, reduction of gastrointestinal absorption by use of binding agents and removal by dialysis. In this study, we evaluated the effects of chronic administration of soluble chitosan iron (III) (90 days) on comportamental behavior, body weigth, biochemical and hematological parameters and anatomopathologycal and iron depositions, in male and female Wistar rats. The animals were separeted in three groups that received saline (control), 50 mg/kg soluble iron(III) chitosan, and the last one 100 mg/kg of the complex. Commercial chow and water were offered ad libitum during the treatment. The adsorbent was diary administrated by gavage. A satelite group (some animals) were maintened in observation for more 30 days to verify the increase or reversibility of toxic effects. The results showed that the chronic administration doesnt cause effects on comportamental bahavior. Significant differences were not observed in the analyzed parameters, between the control group and the groups that received the polymer. The results showed no obvious indication of toxicity in any group receiveing soluble iron(III)-chitosan in terms of clinical signs, food intake, gain weigth, hematology and serum biochemistry. Iron determinations shows that this metal doest accumulates in vital organs, suggesting the complex stability. These result suggest the soluble QTS-Fe(III) polymer would be tested in complex clinical tests and may be, in the future, a new phosphate binder.
