RESUMO

In Juvenile Justice System, assess the level of involvement of adolescents who commit criminal acts is crucial to judicial decision-making and to direct socio-educational interventions. In this context, the assessment of personality aspects helps verify how much activity infraction reports to developmental deficits. Studies have shown that the Jesness Personality Inventory (IPJ) is an instrument which enables the assessment of adolescents in conflict with the law, starting from their dominant personality characteristics. Developed in the American context, especially for adolescents who commit criminal acts, the IPJ is composed of 160 items grouped into 13 scales, being ten resembling personality traits, two rating scales based on DSM-IV criteria and a final scale (Associal Index). This study is part of the efforts to verify the applicability of the inventory to the Brazilian context, aiming at accomplishing the cross-cultural adaptation of IPJs revised version for Brazilian male adolescents, between 14 and 18 years old. The cross-cultural adaptation of the instrument involved translation procedures, checking of the psychometric properties (evidences of validity and reliability) and establishment of results interpretations regulatory standards. The translation process was developed in stages: translation, back-translation and comparison of the items, carried out by bilingual psychologists and with previous experience in the translation of instruments. For the other analyses and establishment of regulatory standards, 346 teenagers, aged between 14 and 18 years, from public and private schools of the city of Ribeirão Preto replied to the inventory. The data collection was executed in groups of eight teenagers in average, in the context of educational institutions. After the comparison of the inventories in accordance with the technical criteria of the instrument, the analyses were held on specific statistical treatment using SAS 9.0 and R 12.2 softwares. The analyses of validity evidences criterion-related were executed by comparing the results of the sample with a sample of adjudicated adolescents from the research groups database. Significant differences were found in seven of the eleven scales of the instrument (SM, VO, Au, Al, MA, Rep, AI). The internal consistency (reliability) analysis demonstrated satisfaction indexes, considered satisfactory, ranging from 0.77 to 0.90 for the scales of the instrument. The norms (t score) have been established for each questionnaires scale in the general sample and by age of the respondents. Comparisons with the first study of standardization in the Brazilian context showed changes in all scales, in at least one of the age groups examined, indicating the need for use of up-to-date standards. The data allow the proper interpretation of the results on the instrument for adolescents in the contemporary socio-cultural context. Observed the peculiar characteristics of the phenomenon of juvenile delinquency, its seriousness and the need for specific intervention practices and results, the study integrates the knowledge field in the area and offers a significant contribution to the discussion of assessments and interventions with adolescents in conflict with the law.
