RESUMO

This thesis focuses upon the relationship between reading and the identity s constitution of five subjects, teachers of a public high school in the state of São Paulo. I study their family, school and social literacies and their profiles as readers and teachers in order to think about the functions of reading in the constitution of their professional and personal identities in their socio-historical and cultural contexto The analysis focuses the representations they construct about themselves, their readings and their profession, and the identity positioning involved in the interdiscursive processes of identity constitution. The data are collected by means of interviews that took place in the subjects home or workplace and of ethnographic participant observation at school. This study draws upon the studies of literacy, upon Bakhtinian concepts of language/discourse associated to Discourse Analysis and to sociological and anthropological studies of reading and identity
