RESUMO

The study performs an economic assessment of a cardiovascular risk of the basic supplies unit of Braskem, petrochemical complex of Camaçari, Bahia. 912 employees of the unit were submitted to a complete health appraisal in 2005. 254 employees of another petrochemical company in same complex were used as control group. The control company used the same assessment methodology. The difference was the different implementation period. The basic supplies units had the program implemented for more than 10 years, while the control was starting the program. The methodology uses a modified Cooper protocol. The study detected a significant difference between the populations with a more favorable profile in the basic supplies unit. The assessment used only the direct costs of the cardiovascular appraisal and the avoided costs in the interventions of cardiovascular events. The basal assessment results have shown a ratio of 0,46 for each monetary unit invested. An univariate analysis resulted in a variation from 0,07 to 1,25 for each monetary unit. A least one death was avoided in 10 years of the follow-up. The benefit/cost is equilibrated (greater than the unity) for a death avoided cost of R$ 843 000.
