RESUMO

As a result of the food exports raise as well as to the lack of environmental controls over the agricultural productivity, the NBR ISO 14001:2004 implementation is highly expected. It could lead the agriculture to a potential improvement in its productivity rates and its production figures, concerned to quality and quantities. The lack of environmental controls has encouraged the present research. It aims at introducing and alternative to strengthen the environmental balance through a previously chosen tool. This tool, which is also internationally available, is the NBR ISO 14001:2004, presently in its 2004 reviewed version. The chosen research area was Greater Campinas Area due to its importance to the agribusiness, mostly the fruits sector. More recently, through the negative weather interferences in food production, the growing food production demands and in order to facilitate the production raise, the expansion of agricultural frontiers through further clearance of native forests became an essential requirement. Besides, the higher chemicals use, such as herbicides, insecticides and fertilizers also became a must. As a result of these actions, a number of changes have taken please and among them, higher residues levels, which have caused intensive impacts over the environmental and over the public health. Based on this picture the present research proposes a critical analysis of the NBR ISO 14001:2004 implementation in farms, through visits to productive rural areas. These visits aim at making a survey on the farmers awareness and on the present market?s development level concerned to the NBR contents and implementation. This could be done through registers based of checklists. There are environmental contamination risks in the present conditions, due to production characteristics, such as agrochemicals use, organic residues, an extent range of storage technologies and the consequences related to legal requirements which have not been yet. The search for a proper and effective solution takes place is result of the necessary recognition imposed by the industry, the commerce, the agriculture and the population. Producing with lowest environmental impact as possible is a must. In visits and audits in farms whose farmers have accepted participating of the research, a total unawareness of the NBR ISO 14001:2004 was found as well as its non-implementation, concerned to its content, its adaptation requisites and its benefits. In order to implement it in farms, during the visits, and use as interviews guidelines, a NBR basis checklist was made to assess the extension of the NBR regulation requisites fulfillment
