RESUMO

The objective of this research was to identify and analyze the interrelation among the concepts of information literacy, technology, and information, in daily activities of librarians of private higher education institutions located in the city of Salvador (Bahia, Brazil), until May 2008. In order to accomplish it, an investigation was carried out on how digital technologies are used and understood by librarians, trying to observe how these professionals develop their practice, considering the possibilities of social transformation. In terms of research methodology, it was used the materialistic dialectic approach. The procedures were the monographic, the historical and the statistical methods. The data collection techniques used were indirect documentation (bibliography and document research) and extensive direct observation (use of forms). 53 private higher education institutions were visited, so that the data collection instrument could be applied to their 60 librarians, who registered impressions on their knowledge and experience with computer systems and strategies for the search, location and retrieval of informational contents in the web. Based on the investigation results, it was concluded that the bond established between technology and information allows the dialectical comprehension of the contradiction in which the universe being investigated is inserted. The contradiction is represented by the deepening of the difference between the traditional library practices and the new ways of knowledge sharing through digital ways. The overcoming of such contradiction is translated into the exercise of information literacy: while enhancing the consciousness towards new possibilities of knowledge by dominating the real sense of technology, the librarian creates the opportunity for the qualitative transformation of his or her environment.
