RESUMO

The relation between plasma fluoride concentration and nephrotoxicity was studied in humans adults after topical application of fluoride gelo Fluoride gel was applied in four volunteers, three of them spat the remaining gel in the mouth and the fourth swallowed it. The peak of plasma fluoride was reached 30 min after the topical applicationin the subjects who spat the fluoride excess, with a mean value of 330.0 ng/ml (17.3 µM/1). When the gel was ingested, the peak occured after 2 h with a plasma concentration of 2,180.0 ng/ml (114.7 µM/1). Tn both tested conditions, nephrotoxicity was characterized by serum and urine alterations in urea, creatinine and sodium concentrations. Furthermore, the subject who ingested the gel presented side-effects such as nausea and illness. These results suggested that topical fluoride gel application produce changes in renal function
