RESUMO

Considering that the development of a human being takes place within a historical/cultural context and that the Social Representations Theory is concerned with understanding the interactions between man and his environment in the construction of reality, this paper aims at investigating the social representations of masculinity by male teachers of elementary and middle school. It aims at analyzing how these teachers regard themselves or believe to be regarded professionally, since they have an occupation that is socially associated with female characteristics and is mostly followed by women. This study was carried out with sixteen male subjects eight elementary school teachers and eight specific subject teachers, who work at three public schools in Distrito Federal. The subjects were divided into four focal groups with four people each two groups of elementary school teachers and two groups of specific subject teachers who were asked to discuss masculinity in the teaching practice. Discussions in all groups were recorded on audio and video, being later transcribed and analyzed in terms speech acts. The results have shown that, independently from the school grades or the teachers field of work, in the conception of these teachers there still prevails a representation of genre roles in teaching practice which is associated to a traditional, naturalist view of female teachers as being more naturally capable of looking after and alphabetizing in other words, they are more qualified to work with children at the first levels of education. Male teachers were associated with discipline, authority and control over the classroom, being thus more able to deal with older students who require such kind of intervention. Results suggest that the discussions about social representations of gender have not got effectively into school institutions.
