RESUMO

The aim of this study is to investigate the place of childhood in the curriculum of an elementary school which is linked to the Regional Education Management of the town of Itajai, Santa Catarina. Childhood, viewed as a social category constituted through history, suffers continual changes of conception due to the influence of economic, social and political aspects. In view of this understanding, childhood, in this work, is conceived as the social condition of being a child. This research was carried out using a qualitative approach, based on a case study. The data were collected through school and official documents, photographs, participant observation, and interviews during the period March to October 2008. The data were analyzed using content analysis. As a result, it was observed that the possibility of childhood becoming the primary aspect in the debate on curricular organization reflects the limitations that education professionals face, to widening their professional knowledge as well as their working conditions in schools, such as: organization of space, teaching plans, professional development, involvement with the children, and moments to reflect on their professional careers, both personally and collectively. In contrast to these limitations, it was observed that there are isolated actions in the school that highlight childhood as a necessary perspective for the reorganization of the elementary school curriculum. This fact reflects a need to consider professional development as a continual monitoring policy
