RESUMO

This research aimed to exploit the subjectivitys contents related to hearing aspects among workers in the Campinas region. The performed research objectives were: question individuals perception of hearing capabilities as well as the importance it is given to it, gather data on hearing behavior and understand their sense of prevention. Studied population included five women and nineteen men, ranging from the age of 25 to the age of 55 years old. All participants were industry workers requested to perform audiometric exams by their employers. Participants were those employees frequently asked to perform exams since they were exposed to noisy environment more often. The interest in exploiting such subject led us to choose a qualitative method of survey. As such, we had to perform the survey assessing individuals discourse, which allowed us to have a deeper understanding of how surveyed population conceived their hearing. The literature we relied on was Contents Analysis by BARDIN (1977), which drove us to make an objective analysis of the discourses content. Interviewed people were separated in two different groups. People with regular hearing levels compounded the Group 1 and Group 2 was compounded by those with some kind of altered hearing level. Conclusions revealed similarities between the groups with regards to hearing importance, perception, habits and prevention notions. Moreover, it clearly showed that people with hearing losses did not demonstrate more consciousness regarding hearing problem risks. Considering this research as a process that claims for its continuity, either in theoretical or in methodological field, we must highlight the importance of facing each appointment as unique. Complaints such as: hum, difficulty to communicate while in noisy environments, lack of concentration and annoyance might be associated to noise and precede hearing deviations. Thereby, phono-audiologists must indeed consider all related complaints and be aware to proactively orient and address them all. Finally, we must to emphasize that phono-audiological practices must have its scope enlarged beyond the educational step of hearing conservation program and, above all, must consider the hearing relevance in what concerns life quality
