RESUMO

This study analyses the different conceptions of learning, in the voice of the learners in the development of the communicative language abilities in the foreign language (FL). The research was carried out in the classroom with a group of university learners who are learning Spanish as a FL at a University in the Vale do Itajaí of SC, Brazil. The data come from, (1) the recording of the pedagogical activities during the first semester of 2004; (2) from texts produced by learners about their learning strategies of the FL; (3) from the interviews about their learning, and from the notes made by the researcher about the teaching and the behavior of the learners during classroom activities. The data are analyzed, interpreted and compared to the learning theories surveyed in the study. The results of the analysis indicate that students learn: by reading and listening, by communicating through meaningful language activities; by exercising the FL through motivating activities; by writing and speaking; by exposing themselves to the language; by interacting in the FL with colleagues and teachers; by relating the FL to their mother tongue, but also by producing the FL without relating it to the mother tongue; by repeating structures and words; by researching, discovering the language by themselves; when the written language is presented together with the oral language; when the teacher takes into account the learners affective factors as well as his cognitive style for learning; when learners are motivated to engage in learning activities beyond the FL classroom. Other aspects were also raised by the learners who participated in the study: the learning process of a FL should follow a pre-determined order with sequenced order; the learning process of a FL is more complex than the acquisition of the mother tongue; to know a FL means to develop a broad lexical ability in the FL; visual reinforcement helps the learning process. Concluding, the study also presents some final remarks about the pedagogical implications of the findings. The study expects to contribute to a better understanding of the issues related to FL learning and education, which have the language as its main object of the study, more specifically the ones that deal with the acquisition of languages
