2. Treatment-resistant bipolar depression: concepts and challenges for novel interventions
Treatment-resistant bipolar depression (TRBD) has been reported in about one-quarter of patients with bipolar disorders, and few interventions have shown clear and established effectiveness. We conducted a narrative review of the published medical literature to identify papers discussing treatment-resistant depression concepts and novel interventions for bip

3. Glycemic and nonglycemic mechanisms of congenital malformations in hyperglycemic pregnancies: a narrative review
ABSTRACT Congenital malformations are more frequently found among children born to mothers with diabetes than in the background population. There are several complex mechanisms involved in the development of congenital malformations in the offspring of mothers with hyperglycemia, such as the overexpression of glucose transporters (GLUTs) 1 and 2, the increas

4. Acute Kidney Injury after Heart Valve Surgery in Elderly Patients: any Risk Factors to Modify?
Abstract Introduction: Postoperative acute kidney injury contributes to longer hospital stays and increased costs related to cardiac surgery in the elderly. We analyse the influence of the patient’s age on risk factors for acute kidney injury after cardiac valve surgery. Methods: We evaluated the prevalence and risk factors for acute kidney injury in 939

5. Postoperative angioedema induced by angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor: case report
O objetivo desse re

6. Correlation between the cytokine profile and anticongestive medication in patients with chronic chagasic cardiopathy
Abstract INTRODUCTION: Chronic chagasic cardiopathy (CCC) is essentially a dilated cardiomyopathy in which a subacute, but constant chronic inflammatory process causes progressive destruction of the heart tissue. The action of proinflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interferon gamma (IFN-γ), and anti-inflammatory cytokines,

7. Secondary prevention of coronary heart disease: a cross-sectional analysis on the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil)
ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Coronary heart disease (CHD) remains a major cause of mortality worldwide and in Brazil. Use of standard medications after CHD has been proven to avoid new events and reduce early mortality. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to analyze secondary prevention of CHD and its association with the baseline characteristics of the Brazilian Longi

8. Isolation and biochemical characterization of bradykinin-potentiating peptides from Bitis gabonica rhinoceros
Abstract Background: Venoms represent a still underexplored reservoir of bioactive components that might mitigate or cure diseases in conditions in which conventional therapy is ineffective. The bradykinin-potentiating peptides (BPPs) comprise a class of angiotensin-I converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. The BPPs usually consist of oligopeptides with 5 to 13

9. GC–MS based metabolite profiling and angiotensin I-converting enzyme inhibitory property of black tea extracts
Abstract Angiotensin I-converting enzyme inhibitors are used as therapeutic agents for the treatment of hypertension. Regular consumption of black tea (Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze, Theaceae) has been reported to lower blood pressure. The aims of the present work were to compare chemical composition and angiotensin I-converting enzyme inhibitory properties

10. Influence of antihypertensive drugs on aortic and coronary effects of Ang-(1-7) in pressure-overloaded rats
This study investigated the influence of antihypertensive drugs, such as angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs), AT1 receptor blockers (ARBs), voltage-gated L-type calcium channel blockers, and mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs), on the effects of angiotensin-(1-7) [Ang-(1-7)] on aorta and coronary arteries from pressure-overloaded rats.

11. The Influence of Brazilian Biodiversity on Searching for Human Use Pharmaceuticals
This relatively short review will cover the history of some potential drug entities whose beginnings were from Brazilian flora and fauna that led to scientific findings many years later that could not even have been thought of at the time of their initial discovery. The first two are the discoveries of the effects of peptidic toxins from the highly poisonous

12. Mortality reduction with use of oral beta-blockers in patients with acute coronary syndrome
OBJECTIVES: Recent studies have revealed a relationship between beta-blocker use and worse prognosis in acute coronary syndrome, mainly due to a higher incidence of cardiogenic shock. However, the relevance of this relationship in the reperfusion era is unknown. The aim of this study was to analyze the outcomes of patients with acute coronary syndrome that
