1. Chromenes from leaves of Calea pinnatifida and evaluation of their leishmanicidal activity
Calea pinnatifida (R. Br.) Less., Asteraceae, is popularly known as “quebra-tudo”, “cipó-cruz” or “aruca”. This species is used in the folk medicine for the treatment of stomach pain, giardiasis and amoebiasis. The aim of this study was to isolate and identify chromenes from leaves of C. pinnatifida and evaluate their leishmanicidal activity. A

2. Frequency of amoebiasis and other intestinal parasitoses in a settlement in Ilhéus City, State of Bahia, Brazil
Introduction: This study evaluated the frequency of intestinal parasites, emphasizing the identification and differentiation of Entamoeba spp. Methods: Multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR), coproantigen tests and morphometric analysis were performed for Entamoeba spp. differentiation. Results: The overall frequency of intestinal parasites was 65%.

3. Validation and utilization of PCR for differential diagnosis and prevalence determination of Entamoeba histolytica/Entamoeba dispar in Salvador City, Brazil
Amoebiasis is an infection caused by Entamoeba histolytica and is a potential health risk in countries in which health barriers are inappropriate. Since the discovery of Entamoeba dispar, the prevalence of amoebiasis has been modified. OBJECTIVE: This study has standardized the PCR technique applied for the diagnosis of different species of the E. histolytic

4. Discriminação da infecção causada pela Entamoeba histolytica (Schaudinn, 1903) e Entamoeba dispar (Brumpt, 1925) em escolares da rede pública da cidade de Maceió-AL. / Discrimination of infection caused by Entamoeba histolytica (Schaudinn, 1903) and Entamoeba dispar (Brumpt, 1925) in children from the public the city of Maceió-AL.

5. Comparison of multiplex-PCR and antigen detection for differential diagnosis of Entamoeba histolytica
Amebiasis is an infection caused by Entamoeba histolytica. However, differentiation between E. histolytica and Entamoeba dispar, which are morphologically identical species, is essential for treatment decision, precaution of the invasive disease and public health. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate a Multiplex -PCR for detection and differentia

6. Parasitism in Kansas in the 1800s: a glimpse to the past through the analysis of grave sediments from Meadowlark cemetery
During the excavations of the XIX century Meadowlark cemetery (Manhattan, Kansas, US), samples of sediments were taken from around five skeletons, and analyzed to detect intestinal parasites. No helminth eggs were found, but immunological ELISA tests for Entamoeba histolytica were positive in three samples. The immunological techniques have been successfully

7. Amebíase e outras parasitoses intestinais no município de São João do Piauí, PI - Brasil
This work is the result of research to determine the prevalence of enteroparasitosis, particularly amoebiasis, in individual who reside in the rural and urban areas of São João do Piauí municipality where basic sanitary and hygienic conditions are precarious, the water having no types of treatment for the majority of people. In the first step, 791 stools

8. Pleuro-pulmonary amoebiasis
Experience with amoebic infestation of the pleural space and the lung in an area where amoebiasis is endemic is described. The manifestations of pleuro-pulmonary amoebiasis are outlined, and, for completeness, a note is added on pericardial amoebiasis and the technique of pericardiocentesis.

9. Invasive amoebiasis in two patients with AIDS and cytomegalovirus colitis.
Homosexual persons or human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients frequently excrete cysts of nonpathogenic strains of Entamoeba histolytica ("Entamoeba dispar"). However, invasive amoebiasis is rare. We report two patients with AIDS and cytomegalovirus colitis in whom invasive amoebiasis was histologically diagnosed. It is concluded that E. histoly

10. In vitro amoebicidal activity of immune cells.
The amoebicidal activity of peripheral blood lymphocytes and spleen and peritoneal cells from hamsters vaccinated against or protected from hepatic amoebiasis and from those with hepatic amoebiasis was investigated. Peripheral blood lymphocytes and peritoneal and spleen cells from vaccinated or protected animals can kill trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica

11. Rapid latex agglutination test for extraluminal amoebiasis.
AIMS--To develop a rapid latex agglutination screening test for invasive amoebiasis. METHODS--The performance of an in-house latex agglutination test was compared with three standard serological techniques--the immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT), the indirect haemagglutination test (IHA), and the cellulose acetate precipitin (CAP) test. Forty six sera we

12. Effect of silica on resistance of mice to Entamoeba histolytica infection.
The role of macrophages in intestinal amoebiasis in mice has been investigated. The effect of injuring host macrophages on the course of infection was examined by using strains selected as being either genetically susceptible (C3H/HeJ, C57BL/6) or genetically resistant (A/J) to amoebiasis. Mice were treated with an intravenous injection of silica particles 1
