1. Diferenciação celular em Nostoc spp: efeito da intensidade luminosa e do padrão de sobreposição dos filamentos / Cellular differentiation in Nostoc spp: effects of light intensity and pattern of filaments superposition.

2. Metabolic activities of isolated akinetes of the cyanobacterium Nostoc spongiaeforme.
Intact akinetes (spores) of the cyanobacterium Nostoc spongiaeforme can be isolated free of vegetative cells and heterocysts. The akinetes remain viable for at least 2 weeks in distilled water. They do not germinate in water but do so readily when transferred subsequently to cyanobacterial growth medium. Isolated, nongerminating akinetes incorporated 35S fro

3. Nodularia (Cyanobacteriaceae) Akinetes in the Sediments of the Peel-Harvey Estuary, Western Australia: Potential Inoculum Source for Nodularia Blooms
The populations of viable Nodularia (Cyanobacteriaceae) propagules in the sediments of the Peel-Harvey Estuary in Western Australia were assessed over location, time, and depth. The sediments of the Harvey Estuary had greater numbers of Nodularia propagules than those of the contiguous Peel Inlet. This was consistent with the distribution of Nodularia blooms

4. Factors Affecting the Germination of Akinetes of Nodularia spumigena (Cyanobacteriaceae)
Nutritional and physical factors which influence the germination of akinetes of Nodularia spumigena (Cyanobacteriaceae) were examined. Low concentrations of phosphorus (<0.9 μM) were required for germination. Nitrate had no effect, but ammonia, at concentrations of >45 μM, inhibited germination. Salinities of >20‰ were inhibitory to germination. Optimum

5. Cell Wall and Coat of the Developing Akinete of a Cylindrospermum Species
The mature akinete coat of a Cylindrospermum species contains laminar layers, not present in immature akinetes, and a thickened intermediate layer.

6. Identification of an Akinete Marker Gene in Anabaena variabilis
Cyanobacteria that form akinetes as well as heterocysts present a rare opportunity to investigate the relationships between alternative differentiation processes and pattern formation processes in a single bacterium. Because no akinete marker gene has been identified, akinete formation has been little studied genetically. We report the first identification o

7. The devR gene product is characteristic of receivers of two-component regulatory systems and is essential for heterocyst development in the filamentous cyanobacterium Nostoc sp. strain ATCC 29133.
Strain UCD 311 is a transposon-induced mutant of Nostoc sp. strain ATC C 29133 that is unable to fix nitrogen in air but does so under anoxic conditions and is able to establish a functional symbiotic association with the hornwort Anthoceros punctatus. These properties of strain UCD 311 are consistent with previous observations that protection against oxygen
